Part IV: dude!

we're here.
our 'luxury' ranch vacation -
we've got a 3 bedroom, double-porched cabin.   we've got our cowboy boots, our horses have been assigned, now screw our courage to the sticking place* - and bring it
*can you tell that i'm a tad afraid of horses?

our bedroom: king sized bed, ensuite, and all things cowboy

monday morning and everyone is getting suited up

first day, and we're quite stiff by the end. we leave the children on their own and join a group hike for the afternoon

any unease i felt for leaving the children behind disappeared when i saw the narrow cliff faces we had to cross in order to get to this waterfall.

our second full day and we're off on a family-only ride.
we're feeling more at ease....

the afternoon's activity is white water rafting.  no photos obviously, but rob brought a waterproof video camera from work and attached it to his helmet.
we stumbled upon a moose and her calf in the shallow arm of a side river.  there were 2 dogs, one on either side of the river, that were barking and trying to corner them.  (this is probably why they were still in the river when our noisy party went by).  after a few minutes, the mama moose just charged (and thank god not at us - man she was HUGE) and the dogs went running for cover.
it was an awesome sight

wednesday i decide to give my sore right knee a break (meanwhile both of rob's knees are killing him) and take wednesday off from riding to see if i can recover, so the children join a 'kids only' ride, and rob joins an adult group.
and me?  i settle on to my couch with a dvd i brought along, eat smartfood, and enjoy the silence :)
kid's ride

i hear they went to a fort and jumped in the river and had a great time.  plus it gave the children a chance to better know the kids here.  they stopped calling one guy 'the foreign kid' and started using his name, for example :)

meanwhile, today is shotgun day, and we all gather round to learn and shoot
we are allowed to shoot 5 rounds (but, to be honest, that bloody gun in soooo heavy, i can't make it past 4)

fierce shoots 3 rounds, actually hits a clay pidgeon, and decides to quit while he's ahead

and here's me -
so concentrated on aiming that i forget all about the recoil -
and i'm laughing at the shock i get when the butt of the gun knocks into my chin

(i even place a hand on my chest, like an old lady saying 'oh, my!)

then there's rob, the old pro
he gets his first lesson ever and bang, bang, bang - he gets 4 out of 5 just like that.
